The Arch of Peace was commissioned by Napoleon and modeled after the Arc de Triomphe.

Despite the name, the Arco della Pace, or “Arch of Peace” was commissioned by Napoleon as a testament to his military victories. However, the brilliant stone arch was not completed until Napoleon was defeated and exiled. This landmark may have been intended to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris by a French leader, but it was completed by Austrian forces after the Napoleonic Wars. 

Today the arch stands in Simplon Park (Parco Sempione), one of the most important parks and green spaces in the city of Milan. The whole area comes alive at night as locals and travelers enjoy the many bars, pubs and restaurants nearby.

Travel Trivia: There are three sets of stairways in Potala Palace, which are steep and ladder type. Traditionally, only the Dalai Lama was allowed to use the middle one.
