Jasper (Marmot Basin, Alberta):

Located within Jasper National Park, Marmot Basin is less crowded than some of the more famous resorts, offering a more relaxed and serene skiing experience. It offers over 1,700 acres of skiable terrain, with a mix of runs for all skill levels. Lake Tahoe, California, Nevada USA 🇺🇸

Squaw Valley from KT 22 looking over Lake Tahoe and Olympic Lady

Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine lake in the United States, with a depth of 1,645 feet is the second deepest lake. The lake bisects California and Nevada in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. : The lake is famous for its clarity, with visibility up to 70 feet in some areas. It has some of the best outdoor and indoor (the casinos in Nevada) recreation spots to offer.

Palisades Tahoe formerly, Squaw Valley in California is one of the largest and most challenging ski resorts in Tahoe. It was home of the 1960 Winter Olympics and is served by a 4 lane highway from Sacramento from the California side and it is a short about 45 minute from the Reno airport in Nevada with is much more navigable weather when the winter storms come rolling in. It has a large Aerial Tram with stunning views and a “Funitel” with large cabins accommodating 28 people that whisks skiiers and boarders up the mountain every 8 minutes.

My favorite lift by far is KT-22, the long high speed chairlift whisks you up to the peak from which there are multiple ways down the mountain! My favorites are the G.S. Bowl (right under the chairlift), Women’s downhill, and Chute 75.

At the base of the mountain is a modern alpine village, where you can rent equipment, buy fancy ski outfits, dine and stay overnight at multiple accommodations. My favorite place to eat and stay is the Plumpjack inn and restaurant. The food and wine here is excellent. Gavin Newsom the California governor is an investor and he knows his wines!

Palisades is not far from the cute old town of Truckee, which was the mountain train stop on the intercontinental railway. This town used to be frequented by prospectors and maintains a little bit of its historically rough edge. But these days you can dine at some really nice restaurants, and browse some cute stores.

Heavenly valley ski resort which spans both California and Nevada has extensive terrain with some very challenging slopes. After graduating from the University of California Berkeley I needed a well deserved break from my Computer Science Studies. So I did a ski season as a Ski Instructor here. Boy, the resort has expanded and grown since then. These days you can take a gondola from the Casinos and end up at at Adventure Peak recreation area where skiiers can access the upper slopes of Heavenly and for non skiiers they offer activities like snow tubing, sledding and snowshoeing.

My favorite run at Heavenly is called Gunbarrel it is the longest, steepest, bumpiest run in Tahoe. Mott’s canyon on the Nevada side is also fun you enter a wooded canyon from multiple gates, but I don’t think it is long enough and you traverse out of it a ways to get back to the lift. Whereas the Gunbarrel high speed chair lift takes you up from the California parking lot and it is just one long steep bump run back down.

Kitzbuhel, Austria 🇦🇹

Kitzbuhel is a charming old town nestled in the Northern Austrian alps with amazing skiing and a bit of bling. KitzSki covers 230 km (143 miles) of pistes, and is served by 57 lifts. Kitzbühel’s ski area benefits from a well-developed snowmaking system covering over 80% of the runs.

The old town of Kitzbuhel has cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and a blend of traditional alpine architecture with upscale boutiques, fine dining, and lively après-ski options. Kitzbühel offers a wide range of dining experiences, from traditional Tyrolean dishes to gourmet international cuisine.

Kitzbuhel has multiple world class resorts. For example the Kitzhof offers beautiful rooms, views and an indoor pool and spa. You will be pampered and receive amazing gracious hospitality from the staff here, I highly recommend it (if you can get in). There are several Michelin-starred restaurants in the area, including Schloss Lebenberg and Steinberg (now a Kempinski hotel).

The Matterhorn, Zermatt, Switzerland 🇨🇭

The iconic Matterhorn reflected in a mountain lake

Zermatt, nestled at the base of the iconic Matterhorn, offers a quintessential Swiss skiing experience with breathtaking views and world-class facilities. Zermatt is the kind of picturesque Swiss ski town that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook. It’s a haven for skiers, mountaineers, and anyone who just loves that cozy alpine village vibe. The town itself is car-free, which means the only traffic jams you’ll run into are from people leisurely strolling down charming streets lined with chalets, boutique shops, and cafes serving up rich Swiss chocolate and fondue.

And then there’s the Matterhorn, the star of the show. Its jagged, iconic peak is instantly recognizable, and it’s basically a must-see whether you’re there to conquer the slopes or just gaze up in awe. The skiing here is top-notch, with runs that cater to everyone from beginners to experts, and the après-ski? Zermatt and the Matterhorn truly offer that perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

Queenstown, New Zealand, is a paradise for adventure lovers, offering incredible ski experiences against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. There are three excellent ski resorts (or as Kiwis call them, “ski fields”) within easy driving distance of Queenstown. The options for skiing in Queenstown are The Remarkables; Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort. All three are a fantastic choice for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.

Queenstown, New Zealand, is not only famous for its stunning landscapes and adventure sports, but it’s also been the backdrop for some major Hollywood films! One of the most iconic movie franchises shot around Queenstown is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The dramatic landscapes provided the perfect setting for the epic journeys of hobbits, wizards, and warriors, and it put Queenstown firmly on the map as a prime filming location.

Whistler, in British Columbia, is a top choice for skiers from around the world, with its impressive terrain, offering more than 8,100 acres of skiable terrain across two mountains, reliable snow, and vibrant village life. Skiiers from all over the world flock to the slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb. The Peak to Peak connects the resorts via the longest and highest unsupported gondola with 28 large cabins.

The village at the base of Whistler is totally pedestrian friendly, and filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and accommodations. The après-ski scene is lively, with plenty of options to relax and enjoy post-ski festivities. I enjoyed Araxi’s amazing gourmet food (it was so good I had to get their cookbook) and the Bearfoot Bistro where you can enjoy a flight of Gray Goose Vodka in their ice room. You would be disappointed with Whistler the great food, ambience, convenient accommodations with easy access to the slopes is unparalleled.
