Whether spent with loved ones, engaged in festive traditions, or simply reflecting on the past, this evening serves as a powerful reminder of the cyclical nature of time and the enduring human desire for progress and positive change.

The Republic of Kiribati 🇰🇮
The Republic of Kiribati, a nation of 33 islands and atolls in the central Pacific Ocean, is generally the first to welcome the New Year. Kiritimati Island, also known as Christmas Island Kiribati, is a tiny atoll near the International Date Line and the most Eastern island in Kiribati. Tourism in Kiribati comes mostly from New Zealanders and Australians who are attracted to the islands this time of year for the cultural performances, beach bonfires, and community gatherings for a tranquil New Year’s Eve celebration – and the opportunity to celebrate first!
Of note, there is often a debate as to whether or not another island of Kiribati is actually the first populated land mass to ring in the new year. Caroline Island (also called Millennium Island) is a part of the Line Islands group that is a part of Kiribati. Due to a 1995 adjustment of the International Date Line, Caroline Island actually holds the distinction of the easternmost point of Kiribati and is often noted as the first landmass to experience sunrise each day.
Hong Kong 🇭🇰
Hong Kong explodes annually into New Year’s Eve with a dazzling multi-sensory celebration topped off with one of the largest and most dazzling fireworks displays of the night. Every year, the gala over Victoria Harbour is given a new theme. The theme for Hong Kong’s New Year celebration to welcome in 2025 is “Symphony of Happiness.”
Luxury hotels along the waterfront can be booked months in advance by revelers yearning for a close-up view of the spectacle. Celebratory afterparties featuring DJs and live bands can also be found at many of these elite locations. So if you want to take in the New Year in Hong Kong in the future, don’t forget to plan in advance – many months in advance.
For a more family-friendly experience, Hong Kong Disneyland orchestrates a magical show with choreographed drones and fireworks illuminating the Castle of Magical Dreams. For a more down-to-earth tradition, the vibrant Temple Street food stalls stay open well past midnight so tourists and locals can celebrate with savory dim sum, fish balls and other traditional delicacies.
Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺
Given the time zone, Sydney’s iconic fireworks display over the harbor and Opera House is a global television spectacle, captivating an estimated 400 million viewers worldwide. Options for enjoying the festivities range from harbor dinner cruises and rooftop parties to prime viewing spots in waterfront gardens. There are also many family-friendly zones set up throughout the city with entertainment, food stalls, and safe viewing areas for the overhead display.
Ringing in the new year also provides an opportunity for Australians to acknowledge their heritage, with celebrations often incorporating elements of Aboriginal Australian culture and recognizing the traditional custodians of their land.
Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭
One of the most mystical and esoteric festivals can be found in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Every New Year’s Eve thousands of glowing paper lanterns are released into the night sky. The main gatherings are at the Loy Krathong Chiang Mai lantern and the Yee Peng (Yi Peng) festivals, but most temples in the city also host release events at midnight. This act is a symbolic gesture to bring good fortune to all.
Paris, France 🇫🇷
Paris shines even brighter every New Year’s Eve. Fireworks illuminate the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower twinkles with a unique and dazzling light display. On this night, romantic river cruises along the Seine abound and enchanting cabaret shows boost their energy. In the local arrondissements, charming holiday markets, food stalls and live music offer a more intimate and very French way to look forward to the new year.
With the recently reopened Notre Dame Cathedral back after a five year absence, a visit to this landmark could make ringing in 2025 in Paris like no other.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 🇧🇷
Rio de Janeiro is all about love of life, energy and beaches – and the city’s annual New Year celebration is no different. Copacabana Beach in Rio explodes with energy for Réveillon, the Brazilian New Year’s celebration. An estimated two million tourists and locals, dressed in white for good luck, gather on the beach to dance to live samba music and witness brilliant fireworks above. The festivities blend religious traditions, superstitions, and pure joy as the most populated country in South America closes out the year. Locals can often be found paying homage to Lemanjá, the goddess of the sea, with flowers or small offerings placed on rafts during this hectic festival.
A unique, local custom is getting into the ocean and jumping over seven waves. Each wave is said to represent a potential obstacle to overcome in the coming year.
New York City, New York 🇺🇸
To many, New York City is synonymous with New Year’s Eve. Not only is the city a melting pot of vast cultures, the Times Square ball drop is televised to a global audience of nearly a billion people. While thousands brave the crowds for a live experience in the famous square in Manhattan, other iconic celebrations can be found throughout the city also.
There are multiple fireworks displays and drone shows throughout the city. Hotels and famous venues host extravagance galas and dinners with live dancing, a chance to mingle and champagne toasts.
